Its name translates from Norwegian as sunlit mountain with lilies, and it is precisely this image that Maison founder Thibaud Crivelli set out to capture: the memory of discovering a solitary field of lilies during a night hike through a Scandinavian fjord, the midnight sun illuminating waves in the distance, the air heavy with damp marsh grass, guaiac resin, and the extraordinary, almost pearlescent perfume of wild lily blooms. Created in 2021 in collaboration with the acclaimed independent perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer whose credits include Eau des Merveilles for Hermes Lys Sølaberg is a masterwork of contrast and complexity.

The opening is immediately unusual, not the clean brightness typical of floral fragrances, but something altogether more intriguing: quince, bergamot, wine lees, and carrot seeds open the composition with a rich, slightly fermented sweetness that evokes ripe late-summer fruit left to macerate, luminous and dense. It is an opening that signals from the first breath that this will be no ordinary lily fragrance. As the composition unfolds, the lily arrives at its centre with extraordinary restraint, not the loud, fleshy, almost tropical lily of mainstream perfumery, but a smoky, iridescent lily rendered soft and pearlescent by calamus essential oil and dried fruit accords, surrounded by the powdery elegance of iris. Nathalie Feisthauer described her approach as building the lily not as a solo, but as a mood one lily flower in a landscape of forest, wood, and ancient stone.

The dry-down is where Lys Sølaberg achieves its full grandeur. A base of exceptional complexity ambroxan, oak moss absolute, guaiac wood, cedar essential oil, torrefied oak chips absolute, tobacco absolute, cistus labdanum, mate, and patchouli builds a warm, smoky, resinous foundation of extraordinary depth and longevity. The torrefied oak absolute, a rare and singular raw material, contributes a distinctive charred wood warmth that is simultaneously masculine and deeply comforting, like embers of a dying fire in a stone mountain lodge. At 20% concentration the highest in the Maison Crivelli collection Lys Sølaberg has exceptional staying power.
